Overivew of Vietnam War - 1926 Words
Between the cessation of the Second World War and the onset of the 21st Century, the United States of America and the Soviet Union were embroiled in a geopolitical standoff known as the Cold War. In this international ââ¬Å"gameâ⬠of strategic maneuvers and incidents, both nations attempted to assert their influence over other states in what was essentially an ideological clash between democracy/capitalism and communism/socialism. Although the Cold War did not involve a full-scale, direct military confrontation between both powers, this notion manifested itself in the form of proxy wars and sub-conflicts. The United States and the Soviet Union backed countries that aligned with their respective interests, and through financial, political, andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦During the French Indochina War, the Soviet Union and China funneled supplies to the Vietminh in its war against France. Conversely, the United States chose to reinforce the French in a maneuver to uphold its interests in the region. At the time, US Secretary of State Dean Acheson and President Harry Truman saw that the Vietminh was comprised of communist sympathizers and idealists. Fearful that Franceââ¬â¢s expulsion from the region would be accompanied by a communist takeover of Vietnam, Acheson petitioned Truman into committing logistical and financial support to Franceââ¬â¢s efforts in suppressing the Vietminh insurrection (Murray-7). Although the Vietminh had distinguished itself in fighting against Japanese occupation during the Second World War, it was evident that the movement was being affected by factionalism and ideological distinctions. The Vietminh consisted of both communist and anti-communist members. Despite vivid mistrust and suspicion between both sides, the only mutual objective that all Vietminh members shared was the defeat of France. It was this objective that maintained the fragile unity amongst the Vietminh. Many non-communist Vietminh leaders planned to collaborate continuously with their communist counterparts for the duration of the war, and when the opportunity presented itself, purge the Vietminh of any communist influences. Interestingly enough, this plan was reminiscent of those devised by European resistance movements during the Second World

Imagery In A Good Man Is Hard To Find - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 611 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/05/31 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: A Good Man is Hard to Find Essay Did you like this example? Flannery O Connor, was a strict Catholic from Georgia, O Connor often displayed a sense of spiritual corruption within the characters in most of her stories. One of O Connors well known stories, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, has a lot of imagery and foreshadows toward the characters who sadly meet never make it to Florida, yet instead meet their bloody end to a man named The Misfit. The grandmother was the one sign of foreshadowing within the novel as she stated on the first page. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Imagery In A Good Man Is Hard To Find" essay for you Create order There are also shown foreshadowing in the graveyard with there being 5 to 6 graves. The last sign of foreshadowing shown was as they were walking around they saw 6 columns. The Grandmother was the first to do any foreshadowing within the novel. She stated to John Wesley and June Star Yes and what would you do if that fellow, the Misfit, caught you? Even though she warning of the Misfit, her activities various signs of foreshadowing of their inevitable encounter with the Misfit. The grandmother warned about the Misfit in the first paragraph of the story: `Here this fellow calls himself the Misfit is loose from the federal pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people.' This was the first sign of an obvious Foreshadowing within the novel itself. The grandmother is very hypocritical when it comes to following through with what she says or doing what she states to other people as she was the one who said Florida was dangerous. As the one who states such valuable information to the people you love you still disregard it and go to Florida to avoid being left behind. There were about six graves fenced in, which was a major indication of foreshadowing. John Wesley asked about where the plantation was, the grandmother replied, Gone with the Wind, which was foretelling their demise. Red Sammy also narrated about Two fellers come in here last week in an old beat up car. These people were the Misfits goons, and they were offered free gasoline from Red Sammys store, probably because of his fear that he was dealing with notorious killers. Red Sammys wife also gave a warning by saying, I wouldnt be a bit surprised if he didnt attack this place right here. This was a self-explanatory caution signal gave by the store owners which was ignored. The family was in a town named as Tombsboro, which name itself was a sign of foreshadowing. When the family finally meets the Misfit, he arrives in a hearse like vehicle which is foreshadowing death. The hearse is used to bring move coffins from place to place, while the misfit is considered the bringer of death within the story as all the death seems to come from him. Red Sammy tried to warn the family that the misfit may be in the area as the name of his restaurant is also the name of a card that represents warning and Sammy let two guys who were the misfits goons fill up gas on credit. This short story has many signs of foreshadowing within it that if known by the family could have been essential. The grandmother was the base off all the foreshadowing by talking about what if they ran into the misfit, which later occurs. There is also the graves and columns which just so happen to have the exact number for each of the family members. These are just a few of the examples of the foreshadowing that happens within the book of things that take place to the family until their death which I feel was undeserved.

Education vs Prison Funding - 2137 Words
Final research paper on ââ¬Å"Education vs. Prison Fundingâ⬠The government is responsible for security of its citizens and it is also responsible to provide a safe socio-economic environment to its people, and in this context; Jails and schools are two important institutions of any society, which need regular monetary support from the government. Thus government has to be very careful in allocating funds to both of the institutions; as one punishes the convicts and other makes the people skillful, and wise enough to get a job and earn money for family. Government has to be very careful in allocation of funds to them, as it is very critical to decide which institution should be allocated more money. With this data we can assume the amount of funding required for the functioning of jails. Prisoners are seen as potential threat for the society; government spends billions annually to keep criminals in jails, to supervise those on parole and probation. Though the prisoners are also human beings and deserve basic comforts of life in jail too; but, it is also necessary for the government to instill fear of prison in minds of all the people and it is not possible when prisoners enjoy the comfort in prisons. Jails should be dreadful for criminals and this fear should work as a deterrent to commit crime, but studies have revealed that fear of prison is not a successful deterrent for major part of prison population. Sometimes they donââ¬â¢t have an option but to commit crime, as many of them are not educated enough to get a decent job and earn money; so they resort to crime to earn a living. A report titled. ââ¬Å"Education and Correctional Populationsâ⬠suggests that it can only be stopped, if prisoners are provided education to make them skillful, and instead of spending money o n gyms and other recreational things for prisoners, jails should spend money on making a good library and providing technical education to prisoners, so theyShow MoreRelatedComparison Between Schools And Prisons1732 Words à |à 7 PagesSchools Vs Prisons The United States prison population has grown from approximately 500,000 to 2.3 million people in three decades. Management Reflection Paper free essay sample
At Stanfordââ¬â¢s commencement speech, Steve Jobs mentioned that one realizes how the dots in life connect to a whole afterwards, emphasizing the fact that a career is not merely a goal in life but rather a progress of different occupations. It is important to realize that a career is a progression of jobs and not just one job at a certain point. Although it is hard to plan oneââ¬â¢s career ahead, unable to predict where one will be in the distant future, it is possible to at least vaguely design what type of occupations one would like to go through. In this regard, I wish to become a leader in the cell phone industry since I am very interested in the technology behind cell phones and also how people interact with them. To achieve this ââ¬Å"goal,â⬠I propose a career path that includes various jobs that will aid in achieving this goal. We will write a custom essay sample on Management Reflection Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Initially, I would like to set my first ââ¬Å"dotâ⬠as a developer of cell phones at Samsung Electronics. Samsung is relevant to my goal in my early career because of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. With regards to intrinsic motivation, I can learn technology from there that will aid in starting my own company in the future. The reason that I picked Samsung over numerous other companies is because it has the most advanced cell phone technology in the world. Recently, Samsung launched a new smart phone called Galaxy S3. According to consumers who are using Galaxy S3, they evaluate it as the most advanced smart phone in the world. In comparison to the competing model, Appleââ¬â¢s iPhone, they comment that it is more comfortable, has a wider screen, and has a faster processor. Working at Samsung also fulfills my extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation, by definition, is a motivation that is based on external factors such as social status, financial returns, and also the will to avoid punishment. The reason that working at Samsung fulfills my extrinsic motivation is that it is one of the highest paying companies relative to its competitors. This does not mean that I am only in for the financial returns. The positive side of this is that by having the background of working at a highly credible company, it builds up my personal financial credibility. When it reaches the point where I would like to start my own company, having high credit will facilitate the process of acquiring funds required to finance my company. Although it may be difficult to evaluate myself during the progression to my ââ¬Å"goal,â⬠it is essential to judge myself periodically so that I do not derail myself from the original design of my career. There are multiple ways to do this. I would approach this problem by evaluating how much I am making use of both my intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. In terms of intrinsic motivation, as mentioned earlier, I would like to learn the technology of making cell phones so that I can develop my own technology later on. While working at Samsung, I may develop a core technology that goes into making the CPU that is used in a cell phone. Or maybe I could invent a new type of screen that is applied to cell phones. These achievements may evaluate how much I utilized my intrinsic motivation. The second ââ¬Å"dotâ⬠will be working as a designer at Apple. Apple is relevant to my goal in my mid career because of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, too. With regards to intrinsic motivation, I can learn design from there that will help me to start my own company in the future. The reason that I picked Apple instead of many other companies is because I believe it has the most advanced cell phone design in the world. Recently, Apple produced a new smart phone called iPhone5. According to consumers who are using iPhone5, they evaluate it as the best designed smart phone in the world. In comparison to the competing model, Samsungââ¬â¢s Galaxy S3, they said that it is nicer-looking, has thinner size, and has a cute trademark. Working at Apple also fulfills my extrinsic motivation. The reason is that it is one of the highest paying companies relative to the competitors as I mentioned Samsung above. Same as Samsung Electronics, working at Apple has a positive side of having the background of working at a highly credible company, and it will build up my personal financial credibility, too. Also, I can earn lots of money which I need for starting my own company. In terms of intrinsic motivation, as mentioned earlier, I would like to learn the design of making cell phones so that I can create my own design later on. While working at Apple, I may create a core design that goes into new iPhones in Apple. Or maybe I could invent a new type of trademark or new color of design that is applied to cell phones. These could be used to evaluate me with achievements and how much I make the best use of my intrinsic motivation. With the experience I gained from the two early and mid stage jobs, I plan to use my knowledge to start my own cell phone company. Although it is close to impossible that I can achieve all this by myself, the broad knowledge will help me to get involved in a variety of processes that go into developing a new phone. Also, the network of professionals that I will gain from working in both companies can definitely help me in getting the right people involved in my new company since a company is surely not a one-man business. The startup company will bring both my intrinsic and extrinsic motivations together. One should be careful to mention that this stage will be my final destination, but it surely will be a compilation of the planned ââ¬Å"dots. â⬠As mentioned earlier, it is very difficult to see how the ââ¬Å"dotsâ⬠connect with each other at an early stage in life. But with careful planning and sticking to the plan, I believe that it will help me achieve my goal.
